Starting Your Yoga Journey: Tips and Advises to Find Your Path

Updated: Mar 14, 2024

Are you considering starting a yoga practice but feeling unsure if it's right for you? Don't worry; you're not alone. I was once in the same position, but I'm grateful I didn't let that stop me.

Many people feel overwhelmed and intimidated by yoga, thinking they aren't flexible enough or that it's all about crazy, impossible poses. However, yoga offers something for everybody. As a yoga practitioner and teacher, I've encountered many people who want to start their yoga journey but don't know where to begin. The first thing I tell them is that yoga is a safe, open, and non-judgmental space. You don't need prior experience, a certain level of flexibility, or spirituality to start. Yoga is an ongoing learning process and there’s not a right or wrong way to begin.

One of the best things about yoga is that there is a wide range of styles, teachers, variations, and settings that cater to your specific needs and goals. Whether you're looking for a slow, gentle or a more challenging, active practice, there's something for everyone, from Restorative or Yin yoga to Ashtanga or Vinyasa flow.

I'm not suggesting everyone should love yoga, but unfortunately, some people try just one class and immediately decide it's not for them. However, the truth is that finding the right yoga teacher and style is like finding the right therapist or type of therapy - it may take some time and exploration. Just because one teacher or style doesn't fit your needs doesn't mean that yoga in general is not for you. Keep searching until you find the practice that suits you best. Remember, yoga is a personal journey, and what works for someone else may not necessarily work for you.

As you start your yoga journey, don't worry about achieving every pose. Yoga is an endless journey, and there's no need to rush into anything. Instead, focus on the process, finding balance between effort and ease and never force anything or push your body beyond its limits.

To help you get started, here are some tips:

  1. Try different styles: Explore various yoga styles to find one that resonates with you.

  2. Consider private classes: If you feel more comfortable in a one-on-one setting, consider taking a private class with a teacher who can provide personalized guidance and support.

  3. Stay open: Be receptive to whatever the practice has to offer, this includes its physical and mental benefits, as well as spiritual growth.

  4. Don't compare yourself: Everyone's journey is unique, so avoid comparing yourself to others and focus on your progress.

  5. Take it at your own pace: Begin with the frequency and intensity that feels doable for you, and gradually increase as you feel ready.

  6. Enjoy the journey: Appreciate each step of the journey and the progress you make along the way.

  7. Practice self-compassion: Listen to your body and practice self-compassion. Don't push beyond your limits for the sake of ego.

  8. Go beyond the physical level: Yoga is about finding connection between your body and breath, but also discovering yourself on a deeper level.

In conclusion, don't let fear stop you from starting your yoga journey. With an open mind and willingness to explore, you can find a practice that works for you and reap the many benefits of yoga. Remember, yoga is a journey, not a destination, and every step along the way is worth celebrating. So take a deep breath, trust yourself, and let the journey begin.
